Thursday night, December 1st 2011 saw a tremendous start to this year's Penang International Jazz Festival. In the most beautiful of settings at the Tropical Spice Gardens, Batu Ferrenghi, the Indie performance evening has set the bar high for all that follow.
As a showcase for young Malaysian musical talent, the evening surpassed the highest of expectations. Even a true Penang tropical downpour of biblical proportions (I'm talking Noah, ark, animals two-by-two...) couldn't dampen the enthusiastic crowd's enjoyment of the 3 original talents on display.
Liyana Fizi, Bihzhu and Az Samad were a perfect combination of unique musical entertainment. Accomplished, confident and extremely good company for the evening!
Festival Director - Paul Augustin gave the opening speech at the G Hotel two Fridays ago to launch the press conference, the second press launch in so many days as they had just driven up from the KL launch the previous day.
Paul generously gave me his time to outline how the event grew from a seed of an idea of a jazz festival on an island that was planted and conceptualized in 1996 and 8 years later was realised with the birth of the 1st Penang Island Jazz Festival in 2004.
It didn't happen overnight and it didn't happen without a lot of sleepless and fraught nights either but it has now blossomed into an event that shines bright on the International Jazz and music industry radar screen.

I had a great weekend how about you?

My nieces birthday on Friday kicked off the weekend for me which was soon followed up with a visit to PenangPac on Saturday evening to see a solo guitar performance from Az Samad which was exceptional. To think that this show as well as all performances at PenangPac Straits Quay are FREE until the end of the year is amazing.

The performance put on by AZ was mesmorizing and the sounds that he got out of his acoustic guitar were as wonderous as they were unexpected. He could be considered the "Bill Withers" of Guitar.
Penang Arts scene Just Grew Even Bigger

Last night we officially welcomed the newest and most accessible Theatre into Penangs growing art scene. The Performing Arts Centre of Penang (PenangPac), located at E & O's stunning project Strait's Quay, was opened by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
On the 4th of November, The Right Honorable Y.A.B Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang launched the Penang video commercial at the prestigious E&O Hotel. This 30 second video commercial features Penang's Tourism Ambassador Lee Sinje, an international award winning actress and singer. She has produced a few albums and acted in many award winning movies such as " Ice Kacang Puppy Love", "Re-cyle" and "Koma".

If, like me, you are a frequent visitor to Straits Quay then it will come as no surprise to you that some of the Islands best kept cullinary secrets are to be found here. It is then, with much joy that I have finally gotten around to sampling some of the best Mediterranean fare I have ever had, anywhere, here at Agua.
Karen Tan, the co-owner of Agua (Pascal Martin Daguet is the other co-owner who is based in Russia) very kindly spent the time explaining Agua's menu and concept so that I could better understand where they were coming from and their emphasis on fresh quality ingredients put together in authentic recipes for the delight of Penangites and visitors alike.
